DEPARTMENTS

Department of Civil Engineering

Civil engineering is the oldest and broadest branch of engineering. Civil engineering focuses on the infrastructure of the world which include water works, sewers, dams, power plants, transmission towers, railroads, highways, bridges, tunnels, irrigation canals, river Navigation, traffic Control, mass Transit, airport runways, terminals, industrial plant buildings, skyscrapers, etc.

The Department of Civil Engineering was established in the year 2009 offering a four-year undergraduate course leading to Bachelor’s degree in Civil engineering affiliated to Visveswaraya Technological University, Belgaum with an intake of 60 students. Owing to the demand for Civil Engineers to build good infrastructure facilities at State and National Level, the intake of undergraduate program has been increased to 120 during the academic year 2013-2014. The department also offers Master’s programme in Construction Technology since 2013, affiliated to the VTU, with an intake of 18 students. The department has been recognized as a VTU-research centre in the year 2014, with five research scholars currently pursuing their Ph.D programmes . The Department is well equipped with full-fledged laboratories & state of art infrastructure facilities supported by a team of extremely dedicated, well qualified and experienced faculty members. Industrial visits, dam site visits, visit to water and wastewater treatment plants form an integral part of their UG programme. A ICI (INDIAN CONCRETE INSTITUTE) students’ chapter is in place with regular seminars on the current trends being the key feature of this chapter. A two-week long survey camp is also conducted to enable the students obtain extensive hands-on experience in the use of land surveying instruments and in the essentials of survey practice. Measurements of distances and angles, calculation and correction of errors are introduced. Concepts of higher order surveys and Global Positioning Systems are reviewed and illustrated. Forum activities such as model making competitions are held annually. Guest lecturers are arranged regularly by inviting experts from Industries as well as academics, with special emphasis on industry-institute interaction.

Courses Offered

The courses currently offered by the Department are:

UG PROGRAMME: BE Civil Engineering started with the motivation of producing Skilled Engineers affiliated to VTU with an intake of 120 students. During the programme students are gaining knowledge regarding the mathematics, construction materials, foundation and structural part of the building, ground water quality, hydraulic machines, sophisticated survey equipments, CAD drawings and technical skills needed to analyze and design civil infrastructure systems by specialized quality teachers. In the Survey Camp students are exposed to detailed surveying by making use of latest equipments like Total Station. As a part of the programme students are doing Project work and Internship by updating their knowledge to compete with the modern world. Also the students will have an exposure to research methodology for their projects.

PG - PROGRAMME: The department also offers Masters programme in (MTech) – Construction Technology since 2013-14 affiliated to VTU, Belgaum, with an intake of 18 students. MTech students have done projects of high quality in the field of concrete and contributed to the betterment of technological aspects in the construction part. Students are exposed to leading Softwares in the field of Construction by way of Software Applications Lab. Also, final year students are doing Internships as part of the Curriculum to emphasise on Industry – Institute interaction.

Added to this the Department offers PG Programme leading to MSc., (Engineering).

R and D Centre: The department has been recognized as a VTU-research centre in the year 2014, with five research scholars currently pursuing their Ph.D programmes.

Career Opportunities:A student pursuing an undergraduate course in Civil Engineering is exposed to the following key domains:

  • Construction Engineering
Construction engineering involves planning and execution, transportation of materials, site development. As construction firms tend to have higher business risk than other types of civil engineering firms do, construction engineers often engage in more business-like transactions, for example, drafting and reviewing contracts, evaluating logistical operations, and monitoring prices of supplies.
  • Structural engineering
Structural engineering is concerned with the structural design and structural analysis of buildings, bridges, towers, flyovers, tunnels, off shore structures like oil and gas fields in the sea, and other structures. This involves identifying the loads which act upon a structure and the forces and stresses which arise within that structure due to those loads, and then designing the structure to successfully support and resist those loads. The structural engineer must design structures to be safe for their users and to successfully fulfill the function they are designed for (to be serviceable).
  • Transportation engineering
Transportation engineering is concerned with moving people and goods efficiently, safely, and in a manner conducive to a vibrant community. This involves specifying, designing, constructing, and maintaining transportation infrastructure which includes streets, canals, highways, rail systems, airports, ports, and mass transit. It includes areas such as transportation design, transportation planning, traffic engineering, pavement engineering and Intelligent Transportation System (ITS).
  • Environmental engineering
Environmental engineering deals with treatment of chemical, biological, or thermal wastes, purification of water and air, and remediation of contaminated sites after waste disposal or accidental contamination. Among the topics covered by environmental engineering are pollutant transport, water purification, waste water treatment, air pollution, solid waste treatment, and hazardous waste management.
  • Geotechnical engineering
Geotechnical engineering studies rock and soil supporting civil engineering systems. Knowledge from the field of soil science is applied to safely and economically design foundations, retaining walls, and other structures. Identification of soil properties presents challenges to geotechnical engineers.
  • Water resources engineering
Water resources engineering is concerned with the collection and management of water as a natural resource, combining the elements of hydrology, environmental science, meteorology, conservation, and resource management. Hydraulic engineering is concerned with the flow and conveyance of fluids, related to the design of pipelines, water supply network, drainage facilities (including bridges, dams, channels, culverts, storm sewers), and canals.
